SOTIRIS ATHANASIOU
Born into a musical family and shaped in the heart of Paris, Sotiris has been accompanied by the guitar from the very beginning of his journey. This award-winning guitarist boasts a vibrant repertoire spanning from the 17th century to contemporary music, collaborating with composers in his pursuit of expanding the possibilities of his instrument. Highly regarded by artists in the French capital, he has been praised for both his musicality and technical prowess on the guitar. Sotiris' career as a soloist began at the age of 10 when he gave his first concert. Since then, he has performed across Europe and Japan as both a soloist and chamber musician. He regularly collaborates with leading orchestras in his native Greece and has appeared on France Musique Radio, Arte TV, and Greece's national television (ERT). In 2024, he made his debut as a soloist at the Paris Philharmonic, performing Henri Tomasi's Guitar Concerto alongside the Paris Mozart Orchestra. A passionate chamber musician, Sotiris co-founded "Argos" with French accordionist Julien Beautemps. This dynamic duo is known for its original arrangements of masterpieces such as Gershwin’s *Rhapsody in Blue* and Ravel’s *Boléro*.
Currently, Sotiris is spearheading a creative project titled "Kithara," which invites composers from around the world to write music inspired by ancient Greece. The resulting album is set to be released by Contrastes Records in 2025. Named "Classical Guitar Revelation 2024" by *Guitare Classique* magazine, the Greek guitarist has won numerous prizes in prestigious international competitions. His recent accolades include 1st prizes at the Antony International Guitar Competition (France), Seville International Guitar Festival (Spain), the Roland Dyens International Competition (France), and the Asia Guitar Festival (Thailand). He is also a laureate of the Banque Populaire Foundation. A dedicated guitar professor, Sotiris is frequently invited to lead masterclasses at international festivals and currently teaches at the Conservatory of Versailles. Sotiris' musical beginning owes much to his father, his first teacher. After completing his studies in Greece at the Macedonia Conservatory under Fotis Baxes, he moved to Bordeaux, France (class of O. Chassain) and Seville, Spain (class of F. Bernier), eventually settling in the French capital joining the Conservatoire de Paris. There, he earned five degrees with the highest honors, studying under Olivier Chassain, Tristan Manoukian, Michel Michalakakos, Philippe Bernold, and François Salque. Today he continues to receive guidance from Judicaël Perroy.
